If you happen to have made the wise investment in an Oculus Quest 2, then you will already be having fun with it. This Virtual Reality (VR) system is extremely fun to use, but they are also still quite new. VR isn’t at its full function just yet, so many of its systems and functions can feel somewhat limited. With that in mind, one of the main issues many people face is the battery lifespan. So, how long does the Oculus Quest 2 battery last?
The answer actually depends on what use your hardware is for. The Oculus Quest 2 is extremely popular so many people are even struggling to get their hands on one of the handsets in the first place. Given that, many buy as soon as they see the device in-store and in stock. In all of the promo materials for an Oculus Quest 2, though, you might notice one omission from the fact sheet: the battery life!
This is quite annoying, and it can mean buying with a bit of blind faith. Let’s take a look so that you know what you are buying and how long it should realistically last.
How long does the Oculus Quest 2 battery last?
The main thing to notice is that the Oculus Quest 2 has a battery life that is dependent on what you are doing. Much like your smartphone, really. If you use your smartphone for very basic internet browsing and chat apps, the battery life can last for hours. If you spend all day watching videos and playing games on your phone, though, the battery life is naturally going to be shorter than it was previously.
Keep in mind, also, that the Oculus Quest 2 will be connecting to the internet wirelessly. Wireless internet connectivity is far more draining to a battery than having a wired, tethered connection. So, this is going to play a role in battery lifespan
In general, then, you should expect your Oculus Quest 2 to last for around three hours watching content, and two hours playing video games.
That might not sound like very much, but you will likely find that VR is quite a draining experience. Some relate it to being on a rollercoaster, so two hours of VR gaming can feel like several more hours of gaming with a pad and watching on the TV. So, that might not sound like much playing time, but you would need major digital endurance to last beyond that timeframe normally!
If you are going to be using higher refresh rates, such as 120Hz, you are probably going to be two hours or less in terms of gaming time. So, try to keep that in mind and charge your Oculus accordingly.
Can you use an Oculus Quest 2 whilst it charges?
The good news is that you can also use your Oculus Quest 2 as it is charging. While this means you are less limited in movement if you are enjoying a more stationary VR experience you can play whilst charging. You could also invest in an Oculus Quest 2 battery pack which can further prolong the length of time that you are able to play/watch.
So, keep these simple factors in mind when it comes to buying your Oculus Quest 2. The battery life is a big determining factor in how fun they are to use. Now that you know you have a 2-3 hour power limit before charging is needed, though, you can plan accordingly. Or, you can play whilst it is charging – it really is that simple to have some VR fun!
